ACCREDITED RESIDENTIAL MANAGER (ARM®)

ARM® stands for ACCREDITED RESIDENTIAL MANAGER®. This designation is awarded by the Real Estate Institute of Canada and the Institute of Real Estate Management to specialists who manage residential and apartment properties, rental mobile homes, rental condominiums and single-family houses, and condominiums.

Candidates may be resident, assistant or property managers who deal with minimizing vacancies, controlling property costs, enhancing property values and fulfilling owners' objectives. Every candidate must have a minimum level of experience and must successfully complete a five-day course and examination that reviews the operational issues faced on a daily basis, and a three-day ethics course. In addition, ARM® professionals are governed by IREM's Code of Ethics and REIC's Code of Professional Standards.

1. How do I become an ARM® candidate?

Complete the application form; include all your references, non-refundable processing fee, and mail to REIC National Office. Please be sure to include copies of any documents (e.g. university graduation, course records, transcripts) that will help to expedite your application.
Your professional experience is calculated, your references are contacted, and a chapter interview is conducted (usually at your place of business).
The Admissions Department will confirm your candidacy in writing.

2. How much does it cost?

The non-refundable processing fee is $250.00 plus GST/HST. Chapter dues are set individually, and some may charge GST. Candidates are also required to pay national dues of $399.00 plus GST/HST (effective January 1, 2009) and once approved as members, IREM dues plus GST/HST will apply. These fees are pro-rated quarterly from the time a candidacy is approved for the current year (January-December). As the Successful Site Management course is offered through local chapters, they are responsible for setting the course tuition fee. If the Home Study method is chosen, students must also register for the ARM® certification exam, for which the tuition is $100.00 (plus GST/HST). The tuition for the three-day Ethics & Business Practice course is $550.00 for candidates and $750.00 for non-candidates (plus GST/HST).

3. How many courses do I need to take?

Two courses followed by the ARM® Certification Exam (for the Home Study option)

The first course is IRES201: Successful Site Management, which is available through your local chapter. This is a five-day course, followed by the ARM® Certification Exam, which is written on the sixth day. It is then sent to the REIC National Office for grading, and final results are sent to the student in writing within 60-90 days. The course may also be taken by Home Study, and the materials will be delivered. Students must register directly with REIC, and the work must be reviewed and completed within six months (180 days). If the Home Study option is chosen, students must also register for the ARM® Certification Exam. The Certification Exam (final exam) consists of 100 multiple choice questions. It is an open book exam and is proctored by your local chapter representative.

The second course is REIC 2600: Ethics and Business Practice. This is a three-day course with a final assignment due one month after the course ends.

4. How long does this take?

To qualify as an ARM® candidate, you must submit the application form, all supporting evidence, and undergo a chapter interview. This generally takes four to six weeks, depending on your location and scheduling of the interview. You do not have to wait until the courses are offered through your local chapter. You may take them in another location, but are responsible for your travel and accommodation costs.

5. When do I become a member of REIC?

Once you have successfully completed the program, you are eligible to become a member of REIC.
